As transformações políticas e sociais pelas quais passou a Europa no século XIX, fizeram levantar um clamor generalizado contra o feudalismo, então identificado simplesmente com a brutalidade de mando ou a invasão da vida pública pelos potentados econômicos, já que, como observou Marc Bloch, "é inegável, com efeito, que a confusão da riqueza - então principalmente rural - com a autoridade, foi uma das marcas características do feudalismo medieval".
