Abstract

Foi este amor à Pátria - tão bem compreendido e sentido pelo maior historiador português da primeira metade deste século - que uniu quarenta e três portugueses, nurh idealismo cujas pretensões culturais ultrapassavam as simples formas de cultura etnográfica, para fundar, em 14 de maio de 1837, a Sociedade Gabinete Português de Leitura, que é hoje o maior monumento ao espírito empreendedor dos portugueses além-fronteiras e a mais antiga associação portuguesa do Rio de Janeiro.
