This paper focuses on the work A noite das mulheres cantoras (2011), by the Portuguese writer Lídia Jorge. In the novel, we follow the story of a group of five female singers in their search for stardom. Meanwhile, a narrator returned from Africa, fractured, and haunted by traumas from her own past, stands out. For Maria Graciete Besse (2013, p. 126, our translation), Lídia Jorge’s gaze “rescues from the silence the porous outlines of strangeness and difference”. With this in mind, we are interested in reflecting on the pacts of silence and the symbolic violence present in the narrative, as well as its impacts on the development of the female characters. Finally, it is important for us to investigate in which ways the structure of the narrative acts as a metaphor for the fragmentation of the narrator’s memory and, why not, from the past itself.
