The "Lisbon Earthquake" comes out as the linguistic expression describing a set of what, from a realistic stand, would be a "configuration" of positive evidence to be posed "against facts". A sum total of legends, inquiries and investigation, and effects, would integrate social memory as an obvious piece of evidence, generating a two-folded epistemological hindrance. On the one hand, there stands its reification: the phenomenon is regarded as "evident", "real'; "obvious'; "consensual''. On the other hand, a more sophisticated empiricism would claim "there is a real phenomenon about which we can hold different standpoints". ln other words, there is a generally accepeted "defined object" about which we shall have "views" to entertain. Contrastively notorious writers, namely, Voltaire, Rousseau and Malagrida can come to our aid in the perception of significant hindrances to the constitution of the "Lisbon Earthquake''.
