This text aims to analyze the notion of community that Agostinho da Silva develops in his body of work, regarding the construction of a "national poetics''. Unlike a centripetal type of thought, customary in a certain criticism that tends to place him in the nucleus of contemporary Portuguese national philosophy, what is here proposed is that his concept of nation cannot be understood in a Hegelian perspective, i.e in a perspective of the existence of states that create individuals and are sustained by a History in capital letters (HEGEL, 1988: 42-3), much in the sarne way that his works on Portuguese literature or culture cannot be read in a non-international perspective, or that his idea of a transnational Iberia does not work in a peninsular sense. Our thesis is about a progressive lost of geographical reference in Agostinho da Silva's historical and identitary concepts vis-a-vis the textual tradition, which entails a bigger abstraction of meaning in his language and consequent semantic extension of his terms. ln this process, the work on exegesis and the intertextual dialogue with other "poets of the nation" will mark the shift in Augustinian philosophy. Finally, out of the semantic amplification of his notion of collective identity, what opens up is the possibility of its universalization. Therefore, from his exegesis of Pessoa and his interpreta tive tradition, Agostinho da Silva charts a project of imagining a citizen community that is globalized, multicultural and not Eurocentric.
