ln this year of 2006, when we celebrate a hundred years of Agostinho da Silva's birth, we propose a reflection about the literary production of an author who became known in the twentieth century in Portugal for working towards cultural democratization achieved through the writing the Biographies and the Booklets of cultural diffusion, and in Brazil for founding Universities and Study Centers.
From the analysis of some of Agostinho da Silva's works we will address briefly the evolution of Portuguese Literature, with special attention to some authors he studied, namely Fernão Lopes, Camões, Father António Vieira, Almeida Garrett, and mainly Eça de Queiroz and Fernando Pessoa. We shall also approach some of his literary essays, fiction texts and poetry.
ln the analysis of Agostinho da Silva's style and prose, we shall see how his propositions fit twentieth-century Portuguese Literature and contribute to the understanding of his ideas.
