Agostinho da Silva (1906-1994) fut un libre-penseur qui ne se présentait comme partisant ni de l'orthodoxe ni de l'hétérodoxe, mais plutôt du paradoxe. Ayant intégré le groupe du philosophe António Sérgio, il se trouva bientôt etouffé par le salazarisme reignant au Portugal. Le Brésil a été sa deuxieme patrie. Auteur d'une large prose de réflexion sur la condition humaine et sur le rôle de la nation lusitaine dans le monde, Agostinho fut toujours estimé comme un important penseur de ce qu'on appelle la "philosophie portugaise". En opposition critique à cette vision habituelle, on analyse la façon dont il conçoit la philosophie en mettant en évidence l'important héritage philosophique d'une pensée qui n'a jamais été celle d'un philosophe, mais celle d' un politicien.
