Abstract

This article intends to establish a relationship between Agostinho da Silva's thought and Henri Bergson's philosophy, bearing in mind that the French author's books were among the most read by Leonardo Coimbra and his disciples' generation. Agostinho da Silva was not quite a disciple of Leonardo's philosophy, and thus it is certain that his ideas have not been as pervious to Bergson's arguments as other authors from the Portuguese contem­porary philosophy. However, having studied in Paris at the beginning of the 1930s, Agos­tinho certainly had the opportunity of direct contact with ali repercussions of this French philosopher's work. Even though he defends an essentially physical model regarding the interpretation of reality - opposite to Bergson's biological orientation -, it is possible to find some similarities between the two, namely concerning the development of some of the main concepts which guide their works.

Author Biography

Magda Costa Carvalho, Universidade de Lisboa

Licenciou-se em Filosofia (Ramo de Formação Educacional) na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, em 2000. No ano seguinte, começou a leccionar na Universidade dos Açores, tendo apresentado a esta Instituição, em 2003, provas académicas de Aptidão Pedagógica e Capacidade Científica, com uma tese sobre "O conceito de natureza em Antero de Quental" e uma lição subordinada ao tema "As noções de Verdade e de Justiça no pensamento positivista de Manuel de Arriaga''. Nos últimos anos, tem vindo a ocupar-se das disciplinas de Filosofia Moderna e de Filosofia em Portugal e encontra-se presentemente a preparar o douto­ramento acerca do conceito de "natureza" no evolucionismo de Henri Bergson. Para além de artigos em diversas revistas, publicou em 2006 a obra A natureza em Antero de Quental: o projecto de uma «metafisica positiva», uma edição da Imprensa Nacional -Casa da Moeda.
