This paper's chief aim is to look at the extraordinary life of Brazilianborn Francisco de Lemos de Faria Pereira Coutinho (1735-1822), head and reformer of Coimbra University in 1772, in order to highlight how indispensable it is to build its historical context; or, as P. Bourdieu says, the social suiface in which someone acts, choosing certain paths from among the many possibilities offered. At the sarne time, however, this paper intends to point out the relationship between Coutinho's thought and his works, which exerted such a strong influence in Portugal as well as in its overseas empire.
