Abstract

Antonio Nobre and Alphonsus de Guimaraens stand out in the Portuguese and Brazilian context, because they introduced aesthetic innovations, concerned to formal and thematic principles, not like the French Symbolism, as Eugénio de Castro e Cruz e Souza, for instance, but their own. In their poetical works Nobre and Guimaraens stand out, in their generation' s context, because they put in their poetry scrong attachment to their local origin and representative characters as poetic themes; they introduced colloquial words or phrases to obtain musical effects from this procedure. By this way they reach one of symbolist's proposal: music above all. They also introduced the regional and provincial and daily as well as some Christian beliefs and practices popularly experienced. Those innovations anticipate some main points related to the poetical modernist program: the volksgeist.

Annie Gisele Fernandes, Universidade de São Paulo (USP)

Professora doutora da área de Literatura Portuguesa da Universidade de São Paulo. Fez Pós-Doutorado entre 2002-2003 e tem várias publicações sobre a literatura da segunda metade do século XIX e as duas primeiras décadas do XX, período a que tem se dedicado em suas investigações. Ossian é poeta escocês lendário, do século II e foi epíteto sob o qual James Macpherson (1736-1796) publicou coletânea de poemas em 1760, intitulada Fragments of Ancient Poetry Collected in the Highlands ofScotland, and Translated from the Gaelic or Erse Language (Fragmentos da primitiva poesia recolhida nas Terras Altas de Escócia, e traduzidas da língua gaélica ou erse), que desenvolveu o gosto pela poesia medieval, popular, espontânea, primitiva.
