A pergunta já data de fins do século XIX: existiu um pensamento filosófico no Brasil colonial? Se existiu, em que circunstâncias? Quais foram suas características? Qual o papel nele exercido pelos jesuítas?
É a resposta à última parte da pergunta que nos move. Fazendo-o, estaremos em condições de responder às demais parcelas da questão.
