Abstract

Agostinho da Silva wrote several series of Booklets of Cultural Information before 1950 in Portugal with a pedagogic goal. This paper focuses on two of those booklets published in 1942: O Cristianismo (Christianity) and O Islamismo (Islamism). ln both booklets the author begins as a historian, but continues and finishes as a thinker, exposing his philo­sophical ideas on those two religions. At the time that it was published, the booklet on Christianity brought the author enough troubles to make him leave Portugal and set off for Brazil. Nowadays, Agostinho da Silva's heterodoxy about Christianity seems harmless. However, we wonder if the booklet on Islamism would not have today a significant reper­cussion, which it did not have at the time it was published, attending to today's diffi.cult relationship between Islam and the West. This paper analyzes two of Agostinho da Silva's booklets, bearing in mind the issues of the contemporary world.

Maria Leonor L. O. Xavier, Universidade de Lisboa

Professora Associada da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, onde realizou a Licenciatura em Filosofia (I 981), o Mestrado (1986) e o Doutoramento (1994), na área de História da Filosofia Medieval, e onde tem leccionado, entre outras, a disciplina de Filosofia Medieval, bem como seminários do Mestrado de Filosofia em Portugal; é membro do Centro de Filosofia da Universidade de Lisboa (CFUL) e da Sociedade Internacional para o Estudo da Filosofia Medieval (SIEPM); tem escrito múltiplos estudos no âmbito da confluência da filosofia e do cristianismo na história do pensamento ocidental, entre os quais, Razão e Ser. Três Questões de Ontologia em Santo Anselmo (FCG-FCT, 1999), Questões de Filosofia na Idade Média (Colibri, no prelo), «O Cristianismo e a Filosofia Ocidental: caminhos cruzados» (2001), e «Uma profilaxia antidogmáti­ca. A Teoria da Crença, de Joaquim Braga» (no prelo).
