Abstract

Cain, the last novel published in his lifetime by José Saramago, recovers a reading of the biblical text as if to ratify the idea of man’s disagreements with the sphere of the divine. But beyond his desacralizing and often sarcastic vision, cain is above all a character who crosses spaces and times that can only be experienced in fiction and who transforms his condem­nation to continue wandering into a project to stay alive to bear witness for humanity, thus becoming a kind of double of his author.

Teresa Cristina Cerdeira, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) / CNPq

Professora emérita da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro e pesquisadora 1A do CNPq. Foi Regente da Cá­tedra Jorge de Sena da UFRJ e editora da Revista METAMORFOSES entre 2005 e 2012. É autora dos seguintes livros de ensaio de literatura: José Sara­mago: entre a história e a ficção, uma saga de portugueses (1989 e 2a edição 2019); O Avesso do bordado (2000); A Tela da dama (2013); A Mão que escreve (2014); Formas de ler (2020). Organizou um livro de ensaios sobre a obra de Helder Macedo: A Experiência das fronteiras (2004). Foi co-organizadora de Cleonice clara em sua geração (homenagem a Cleonice Berardinelli); A Primavera toda para ti (homenagem a Helder Macedo); E agora, José(s)? (Homenagem a José Cardoso Pires e José Saramago).
