Between literature and politics: the young Fernando Pessoa and his discontents

Abstract

In this text, we focus on the mechanisms of cancellation employed in the public writings of the young Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935), particularly in the essays “A nova poesia portuguesa sociologicamente considerada” (1912a) and “Reincidindo...” (1912b), published in A Águia, as well as in the unpublished works of his heteronym Jean Seul de Méluret, namely “Des cas d’exhibitionisme”, “La France en 1950”, and “Messieurs les souteneurs”. Through a review of the foundations of cancel culture, we observe that Pessoa’s essays in the saudosista journal recalibrate the social contract, allowing him to shift from purely literary judgments to critiques of certain figures of the First Portuguese Republic. Méluret, in turn, assumes the persona of an observer equipped with morally charged imagery, taking on the role of denouncing cultural manifestations of the French Belle Époque.

Doutor em Literatura Portuguesa com a tese “Álvaro de Campos, um destino à Ilíada” (Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, 2024). Mestre em Teoria da Literatura e Literatura Comparada (UERJ, 2019) com a dissertação “Caeiro-ângulos-Homero”. Especialista em Literaturas Portuguesa e Africanas contemporâneas (UFRJ, 2017). É pesquisador da Cátedra Jorge de Sena para Estudos Luso-Afro-Brasileiros (UFRJ). Áreas de investigação: Modernismo português; Fernando Pessoa; Grécia Antiga; Épica homérica; Teoria Crítica.
